Electronics Technician Program

The Electronics Technician Certificate program provides flexible, skills-based training in basic electronics. It has been developed for adult learners pursuing basic technician level training through independent study, specifically students who cannot attend college full-time because of work or family commitments. No electronics background is required and there are no academic prerequisites, so anyone can get training in this rapidly-growing industry.

Contents of the program includes Current, Voltage, Resistance, Ohm's Law, Parallel and Series Circuits, Magnetism, AC/DC Circuits Capacitance, Inductance, Transformers, Resonance, Filters, Transistors, Semiconductors, Amplifiers, Op Amps and Digital Electronics.

The multimedia program presents twenty-three modules of interactive curriculum using text, video, 2D and 3D animations, photos, audio clips and interactive lab simulations. Pre-tests, interactive exercises, sample exams, and online support prepare you for computer-based final exams. The average completion time of the twenty-three training modules is thirty-two weeks of part-time study.

"The George Brown Electronics Technician distance education program gives our employees the flexibility and convenience of completing an electronics certificate that fits into their schedule and helps them to upgrade their skills."
Sam Lightowler, Superintendent, Toronto Transit Commission

One of the main features of the program is the integration of theory with laboratory experiments and projects. Students who enrol in the program receive a licensed copy of CircuitLogix Pro, which includes both 2D- and 3D-simulation software. Click on the link below for an overview of laboratory simulation software.

The flexibility to study at your own pace in your own home

Students interested in registering for the program can register at any time. Open enrolment allows you the flexibility to complete modules at your own schedule. Typically module completion time is 32 weeks of part time study; however, students with prior training, experience, education or more time allocated to the program may complete it in less time. Non-traditional learners are welcoming the program. More than 20 percent of students enrolled in these Electronics Technician courses are women, compared with only 2% in our traditional classroom-based electronics training program.

Upgrade your technical skills

Upgrade your skills and prepare yourself for entry into or promotion within the technical trades by completing the Electronics Technician Certificate program.

The program is valuable for on-the-job training, with over 100 companies presently sponsoring employees in our Electronics Technician courses. These companies include:

  • General Motors
  • Motorola
  • Boeing Aircraft
  • Hewlett-Packard
  • Nothern Telecom
  • Bell Atlantic
  • Johnston Controls
No expensive books or lab equipment required

The Electronics Technician Certificate program is delivered through an interactive learning package. Upon registration students receive a USB containing 23 modules of curriculum, electronics laboratory simulation software; web based supplemental resources, online testing and 1-888-553-5333 (ref: ) tutorial and technical support. A supplemental textbook is also available to you at an additional cost.

Pay-as-you-go registration

With the pay-as-you go registration option you can enrol in the program for as little as $345 which includes all learning materials, laboratory simulation software, user guide and Module 1. Registration for each of the remaining 22 modules is $60/module. You may register for one or more modules at any time.

George Brown College (GBC) is a fully-accredited post-secondary institution, and has established a reputation for equipping students with the skills, industry experience and credentials to pursue the careers of their choice. GBC offers over 300 programs across a wide variety of professions. Students can earn certificates, diplomas, industry accreditations, and undergraduate degrees.

GBC, Centre for Continuous Learning, is the third largest provider of distance education courses in North America. With over 70,000 full- and part-time students, GBC has 3 main campuses in Toronto, Canada and has established a virtual campus to provide on-line support to over 15,000 distance education students in 40 countries. GBC’s virtual campus provides online learners with many of the same support services offered through in-class, on-campus study including technical and tutorial support, testing and assessment, and employment postings.

The GBC School of Distance Education (SDE), framed by its own mission and values, was formed in 2014 in response to the significant increase in enrolment in distance education courses and programs within the Centre for Continuous Learning and in recognition of the unique challenges associated with supporting thousands of online students in different international time zones and in supporting the unique needs associated with asynchronous learning.

GBC is operating under the authority of the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities in the Province of Ontario. The College received its Charter in 1967. All certificates, diplomas, and degrees conferred by George Brown College are done so under the power vested in its Board of Governors through the Government of Ontario.

GBC is a member of Colleges and Institutes Canada which is a national organization consisting of over 200 post-secondary institutions. GBC is also a member of Polytechnics Canada which is an association of publicly funded Canadian polytechnics, colleges and institutes of technology dedicated to helping colleges and industry create jobs for tomorrow.
